This hand-embroidered chakla is the work of women from the Ahir community of Kutch, Gujarat, where embroidery has long been a vital form of cultural expression and storytelling. Traditionally made as decorative wall hangings or ceremonial textiles, chaklas were created for the home, dowries and special occasions, each one reflecting the maker’s skill and identity.

Worked on handwoven cotton, the surface is densely embroidered using fine cotton threads in a palette that is both harmonious and vibrant. Characteristic Ahir motifs—floral forms, geometric borders and symbolic elements drawn from the natural and pastoral landscape—are arranged with careful balance and rhythm. Small variations in stitch, spacing and colour are a reminder that each piece is entirely handmade.

Both decorative and historic, this chakla can be displayed as a textile artwork or incorporated into an interior as a focal piece. It represents not only exceptional needlework, but the continuity of a living embroidery tradition passed from generation to generation.

Each chakla is one of a kind. This is a vintage piece, c. 40-50 years old.

Pink border, approximately 40cm x 40cm
